Each student is encouraged to study with a private teacher who is a specialist on that student's instrument. Private teachers devote the entire lesson addressing the unique technical challenges of each instrument, and training in literature written specifically for that instrument. The individual achiement that results from private instruction cannot be duplicated in an ensemble setting. As a student becomes more proficient, the love of music increases. A student who attains a high level of musical achievement in high school often continues to play a musical instrument in college and in adult life. A student who participates in private instruction demonstrates a serious commitment to music . . . This will be considered when selecting students for our most advanced groups, and in filling student leadership positions. Our most successful students regularly take private lessons. Due to liability issues, the SMMUSD has directed that music teachers are no longer allowed to recommend private teachers. |
